Square D® was founded in Detroit, Michigan by William Pierce and Harvey Dann in 1896. Originally called Dann & Pierce Electric Works, our company specialized in electrical switchboards and panelboards. By 1927 we officially adopted the name Square D Company and trademarked our iconic Square D logo.
Over the decades, Square D expanded across America and internationally. We led the development of new technologies like enclosed safety switches, circuit breakers, and load centers (also known as breaker panels or electrical panels). During World War II, Square D® proudly contributed to the war effort by supplying electrical equipment for military and defense projects.
In 1991, Square D® was acquired by Schneider Electric and became their flagship North American brand for low voltage and industrial control products. This partnership allowed us to grow our offerings and bring Schneider Electric’s innovations to the North American market.
